2021 was also the third year in a row that TikTok was the most downloaded app, meaning it is growing very quickly.
Staying in the number one spot for three years running means a lot of downloads.
We mean a lot.
In 2020, TikTok reached the two billion download milestone – and then hit three billion in 2021.
It’s the first app, other than Facebook, to reach this milestone. And the number just keeps on going up.
So if you’re looking for an app that can reach a significant chunk of the world’s population, this is probably it.
Naturally, with this many downloads, TikTok is now among the top 10 social media platforms in the world. In fact, as of January 2022, it was the sixth most-used platform in the world.
TikTok is beaten only by Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and China’s WeChat app. In 2021, TikTok beat the Facebook-run Messenger app into sixth place.
Discounting WeChat, which is used exclusively in China, TikTok technically ranks much higher.

The truth is that TikTok is an app for young people. In 2021, 43% of the app’s global audience was people aged between 18 and 24. Only 3.4% of the app’s audience was over 55.
There are still a lot of users between those ages, however. For instance, in the United States, 22.4% of users were aged between 20 and 28, and 25% were aged between 10 and 19.
